Reach Out and Read – Our 2024 Charity Partner!

Ten years ago, at the very inception of Picture Book Summit, we knew we wanted to use a portion of our proceeds to give back. But, we weren’t looking for just any ol’ charity. We wanted to support charities that focus on literacy and getting books into the hands of kids.

Over the last 10 years we’ve been honored to work with and donate over $49,000 to:

  • We Need Diverse Books
  • Two Title I Schools in Oregon and Connecticut
  • Reading Partners
  • San Juan Public Library in Puerto Rico (2-time recipient!)
  • Project Night Night
  • Binc – The Book Industry Charitable Foundation
  • Little Free Library’s Read in Color Program
  • Reading Education Assistance Dog (R.E.A.D.)

You can find out more details about our previous charity partners on our Charity Partner page here.

We’re thrilled to work with our 2024 Picture Book Summit Charity Partner: Reach Out and Read!

Reach Out and Read Charity Partner

Here’s a little bit about Reach Out and Read:

Reach Out and Read was founded in 1989 to help families make reading a part of their routines, and to supply the books they need to get started. Since those early days at Boston City Hospital (now Boston Medical Center), the program has grown dramatically: They are now in all 50 states, with 6,200 program sites that provide 7.1 million books each year. (That’s A LOT of books!)

Reach Out and Read 1
Reach Out and Read is a national nonprofit that champions the positive effects of shared reading and engaging in other language-rich activities with young children. Reading with a parent or caregiver promotes healthy brain development, furthers language acquisition, and helps families build meaningful bonds.

Reach Out and Read 2

Their network of pediatric teams provides families at routine check-ups with the knowledge and tools they need to make reading a part of their daily routine. By integrating reading aloud into pediatric care, they reach 4.4 million children across the country—with more than three-fourths of whom come from low-income families.

They strive to make reading a part of every child’s life and help provide all young people with a foundation for success throughout their lives.

We invite you to help us support this incredible program and be part of Picture Book Summit 2024 on October 5th.

Come be a part of something AMAZING!

Early Bird registration begins June 12th!

Sticking the Landing: Picture Book Endings

PBS 2024 Katie Davis

Over her career, Co-Founder Katie Davis has sold over 1 million picture books. The key to picture books that keep selling long after their launch date? A really good ending—one that not only wraps everything up, but one that makes the young reader want to read it again and again.

Get ready to stick the landing of your picture book with Katie’s help!

It’s all leading up to this. Just like a gymnast on the last apparatus of the meet, your picture book must stick its landing to have a shot at making it to the medals stand. Bestselling author-illustrator Katie Davis will coach us on how to take the twists and turns of our fiction and nonfiction stories to create an ending that will have kids clamoring for your book over and over again.

Sharpen your pencils now and prepare to take notes on this one.

Podcast – PBSummit Roundtable: Why is Everything So Slow?

060 PBSummit Podcast Roundtable slowThe Picture Book Summit Podcast is BACK! We kick off our newest podcast with a new PBSummit Roundtable episode. Our Roundtable discussions are where our PBSummit team sits down and talks about the topics affecting picture book creators today.

In this episode, we ask the question: Why is Everything So Slow? The pandemic is (basically) over, so why are things not back to normal? Will things ever go back to the way they were or is this slowness the new normal in publishing?

Emma Walton Hamilton leads our discussions. She reached out to her agent and two of her editors for their insights on trend in children’s publishing. We hope you find this discussion fascinating and maybe a little uplifting. Ultimately, there’s some good news related to this pace.
