Today we start off BIG with our first Superstar Speaker announcement. For our first reveal, you get not just one, but two Superstar Speakers. Please welcome the Caldecott-Medal-winning duo Philip C. Stead and Erin E. Stead!

Philip C. Stead and Erin E. Stead are the author and illustrator of the Caldecott Medal Book A Sick Day for Amos McGee. They have collaborated on many books together, including Bear Has a Story to TellLenny & LucyMusic for Mister Moon, and The Sun Is Late and So Is the Farmer. Philip and Erin create their books in the hayloft of an old barn at the edge of the world. On October 7, 2023, they will be online at Picture Book Summit presenting…

Picture Book Harmony:

The Marriage of Story and Art

Picture books are a unique art form because of the way the illustrations and words interact within a limited space. While these creative boundaries can be challenging, they have the potential to make the storytelling shine. Celebrated author-illustrator team Philip C. Stead and Erin E. Stead will draw from classic examples as well as their own books to navigate the process of bringing a book to life and reveal how picture book text and art can come together in perfect harmony!

Picture Book Summit is launching into our ninth year and the fun has just begun. Plan to join us October 7, 2023 for a full day of online picture book writing fun including:

  • Three Superstar Speaker Presentations
  • Two in-depth Craft Workshops
  • Agent Panel
  • Editor Panel

This sounds like a great topic! Usually the author/illustrator don’t work together, so it will be interesting to see how their process is!

I am so excited that the Steads are gong to be speakers! I have a special section in my library for their books. We do an author./illustrator study of them in second grade.. Yesterday, I asked my second graders what their favorite read-aloud of the year was–Follow That Fish! was immediately named.

I cannot wait to see and hear Erin and Philip Stead. I read their book The Sun is Late and So Is the Farmer. It looks like a possible candidate for the Caldecott again. It’s magical.
